When God Stoops

By Olivia Richardson

Who is like the Lord our God,

the One who sits enthroned on high,

who stoops down to look

on the heavens and the earth?

He raises the poor from the dust

and lifts the needy from the ash heap;

he seats them with princes,

with the princes of his people.

He settles the childless woman in her home

as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.

Psalm 113: 5-9 (NIV)

“. . .the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth” . . . and what does God do when He stoops down?

He raises the poor.

He lifts the needy.

He settles the childless woman, the barren one.

What a big God. What compassion God possesses to be willing to stoop so far, to bend in the opposite direction of His glorious throne. As He stoops He passes by thousands of angels and saints praising His name, they are completely filled and made whole in His presence. He passes by the works of His hands, the bright stars that shine for us and for Him. He descends through the clouds, making His way through the whirlwind and the storm. He leaves heaven’s dust off His feet, sprinkled amongst the fluffy clouds; all just to be with us.

He bends to brush us with His presence, leans in to caress us with His love, bows His brow to bless us and pour out His Spirit.

He stoops because He sees us & He longs for us & He cares for us; because we are so completely and unarguably HIS.

Say it with me, “I am HIS.”

Even though He is exalted and fills the space even above the heavens with His glory, He came to us and He comes to us still. In His stooping He is faithful. He has shown that He is devoted to us.

A God so perfect in His devotion to healing His broken creation is more than worth all of my love; but am I devoted to Him?

Devoted: “Very loving,” “loyal,” “given over to,” to “give all or a large part of one’s time or resources to."

It means “All-In.” Unabashed, unashamed, unhindered. If I am devoted to God, then even though I seem unqualified, unworthy, and incapable of being His child, I will come. He gently hushes my qualms with His quiet peace that floods me faster than any earthly flood of water possibly could, He gives me rest. Even when I stray, in His grace He still stoops to gently pull my gaze back up to Him. He raises and lifts and settles.

So, because He is willing to stoop, I will be with my God.

  • How do you see God stooping towards you in your life?

  • Are you living devoted to the God who gives you not just life, but life with meaning?

  • How can you actively rest in the fact that God is coming right to you today? How does/should that change how you live?
